Air Force Medical Support Agency

The USAF Animal Use program is a part of the office of Air Force Research Oversight and Compliance (AFMSA/SGE-C). The Animal Use Programs Office implements the animal care and use policies for the USAF. While located organizationally at the Defense Health Headquarters (DHHQ) in Falls Church, VA, responsibility for laboratory animal welfare extends to a large number of recipients of USAF-managed contracts and grants involving animals.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Implementation of USAF Animal Care and Use Policies
  • Review of animal use proposals and protocols
  • Evaluation for compliance with USAF and DoD Policies and other applicable standards
  • Reporting of USAF animal use
  • Site visits to institutions receiving USAF support and funding

USAF and the DoD animal use policy applies to any live vertebrate animal that is being used or is intended for use in a DoD animal care and use program, or to any recipient of a USAF-managed contract or grant.
