The Air Force Medical Enlisted Corps traces its roots to the creation of the U.S. Air Force in 1947, when enlisted medical professionals became an essential part of a new, independent service.

From the earliest days of aeromedical evacuation and battlefield medicine, enlisted medics have been on the front lines - providing lifesaving care wherever Airmen are called to serve.

Over the decades, the Medical Enlisted Corps has evolved alongside advances in medicine, technology, and warfare. Enlisted medics have supported combat operations, humanitarian missions, disaster response, and peacetime healthcare around the world.

Today, they remain the backbone of Air Force Medicine, combining clinical expertise, adaptability, and service before self to ensure the health, readiness, and resilience of the force.

LEARN MORE ABOUT HEALTHCARE CAREERS

What We Do

Air Force Enlisted Medics are the hands-on caregivers who keep the force healthy, ready, and able to fight. From day one, they are trained to deliver real-world medical care in fast-paced, high-impact environments. Enlisted medics work side-by-side with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, performing clinical procedures, assisting in emergency situations, and caring for Airmen, Guardians, and their families in clinics, hospitals, and operational units.

Beyond traditional healthcare settings, enlisted medics are also trained to operate in deployed and austere environments where adaptability and confidence matter most. Whether responding to medical emergencies, supporting flight operations, or providing care during deployments, they are trusted professionals whose skills directly support mission success. For those seeking purpose, responsibility, and a meaningful medical career, Air Force enlisted medicine offers hands-on experiences with lasting impact.

Global Impact

Air Force Enlisted Medics serve on the front lines of care around the world. They deploy alongside operational units, support aeromedical evacuation missions, and provide lifesaving care in combat zones and contingency operations. Their work ensures Airmen and Guardians are medically ready to deploy at a moment’s notice, while also delivering critical care during humanitarian missions and disaster response efforts across the globe.

Through partnerships with allied nations and joint forces, enlisted medics strengthen global health readiness and represent the Air Force commitment to service beyond borders. Whether stabilizing a wounded service member, aiding communities affected by natural disasters, or supporting international medical exercises, their impact reaches far beyond the uniform. As an Air Force Enlisted Medic, every mission is an opportunity to serve, lead, and make a difference - anywhere in the world.

“Our medics are the heart of this mission. As leaders, it’s our duty to cultivate their potential, provide them with the tools they need, and show them that their efforts are the foundation of our success. Let’s carry this momentum forward - together.”

– U.S. Air Force CMSgt James M. Woods, Medical Enlisted Force and Enlisted Corps Chief
