    Aug. 26, 2021 was a terrible day of bloodshed and destruction near Hamid Karzai International Airport, Kabul, Afghanistan, when a suicide bomber killed an estimated 170 Afghans and 13 U.S. service members.

    One year ago, the U.S. Air Force performed the largest non-combatant evacuation operation in U.S. history, Operation Allies Refuge, which saw to the successful evacuation of 124,334 individuals from Afghanistan.

  • Medic team supports mission welcoming Afghan allies

    In late August 2021, the Department of Defense issued a call for volunteers to support Operation Allies Welcome, the federal government’s effort to safely resettle Afghan refugees. Within a month, three medics from the 162nd Wing’s medical group answered that call.
