It’s a New Day: Collaborative medicine saves sickle cell patient

Air Force Capt. (Dr.) Lauren Lee, hematology/oncology fellow at Brooke Army Medical Center, reflects on the care BAMC staff members provided Alexis Piper, a patient with sickle cell anemia, who nearly died from a rare condition called hyperhemolysis. Hyperhemolysis syndrome is a potentially fatal transfusion complication. Many BAMC staff members collaborated to find a treatment for the life-threatening condition.
