SMART program keeps medical Airmen mission ready for future conflicts

Lt. Gen. Thomas Travis, U.S. Air Force surgeon general, discusses the Sustained Medical and Readiness Trained, or SMART, program with John O’Reilly, University Medical Center of Southern Nevada chairman of the board, in the hospital’s emergency room, Las Vegas, Nev., Jan. 13, 2015. The SMART program allows Air Force physicians, nurses and medical technicians the opportunity to hone their skills in a civilian hospital where they have the potential to see more trauma patients than they would in a military treatment facility.
