Air Force officials escort Dr. Thomas Scalea, a leading U.S. trauma surgeon, on an aeromedical evacuation mission into Iraq Aug. 19 and 20, 2009, aboard a C-17 Globemaster III, such as the one pictured here. Doctor Scalea participated in the flight as a contributor to the Air Force's Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills, to observe the conditions Air Force medical personnel face while caring for injured troops and civilians. C-STARS is an Air Force Medical Service training program that links military medical personnel with select civilian trauma care centers across the country to prepare them for the types of cases they will experience while caring for trauma patients at home and abroad.
