Lt. Col. (Dr.) Paul Crawford, 99th Medical Operations Squadron associate program director for Nellis Family Medicine Residency, places acupuncture needles into U.S Army Staff Sgt. Paul Kelly’s, motor transport operator from the Community Base Warrior Transition Unit in Fort Lewis, Wash., head during his acupuncture appointment April 17, 2013, at the Mike O’Callaghan Federal Medical Center, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Acupuncture is a collection of procedures which involves the stimulation of points on the body using a variety of techniques like penetrating the skin with needles that are then manipulated manually or by electrical stimulation. According to the traditional Chinese medicine approach, stimulating specific acupuncture points corrects imbalances in the flow of qi through channels known as meridians. Correcting the different imbalances relieves certain types of pain and treats certain conditions like post-operative nausea, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and depression.
