Fairchild Supports Aeromedical Evacuation Mission
Airmen assigned to the 137th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron deliberate during an aeromedical Evacuation training scenario from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, Nov. 7, 2023. Airmen assigned to the 92nd Air Refueling Squadron assisted a medical team assigned to multiple aeromedical evacuation squadrons with in-flight training. Aeromedical evacuation crews provide time-sensitive and mission-critical care to patients en route to and between medical treatment facilities. AE crews and critical care transport teams execute patient movements using Mobility Air Forces aircraft as well as sister service, contracted and international partner airframes. In 1954, a 50-bed hospital and its staff were airlifted from Donaldson Air Force Base, South Carolina to Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma. Fifty-four people and 36,740 pounds of medical and surgical equipment were flown 1,000 miles onboard C-119s. After the equipment was airlifted, the hospital was set up and ready for business in seven hours and 13 minutes. This marked the first use of helicopters and C-119s being used to move a hospital.
