Gen. (Ret.) Thomas W. Travis, M.D., former Air Force Surgeon General, was presented with the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service, by the American Medical Association (AMA).The AMA’s highest government service award was bestowed upon Travis for his leadership in developing plans, programs and procedures to support worldwide medical service missions.“The AMA gratefully acknowledges Gen. Travis for his work in overhauling the Military Health System which serves 2.6 million beneficiaries worldwide,” said AMA Chair Stephen R. Permut. M.D. “I am honored to present Gen. Travis with the AMA’s government service award for his unwavering commitment to ensuring that the men and women serving in our nation’s military receive the best medical care.”The Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service is named for the founding father of the AMA and recognizes elected and career officials in government service, whose outstanding contributions have promoted the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. Travis received the award during a ceremony as part of the AMA’s National Advocacy Conference on Feb. 23, in Washington, D.C.
