According to the Fireworks Information Center, more than 240 people go to the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the Fourth of July.

Fireworks can be dangerous, causing serious burns and eye injuries. Help prevent fireworks-related injuries and deaths by following these safety tips when using fireworks:

■ Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks;

■ Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities;

■ Never place any part of your body over fireworks when lighting the fuse;

■ Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully ignited;

■ Never point or throw fireworks at a person;

■ Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap;

■ Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly;

■ Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers;

■ After ground-display fireworks complete burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water before discarding to prevent a trash fire; and

■ Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

Following these tips will help you have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
