Kentucky Guard Airmen score top Medical Service Awards Published Dec. 18, 2025 By Airman 1st Class Angelee Barnett 123rd Airlift Wing Public Affairs LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Four members of the Kentucky Air National Guard’s 123rd Medical Group here were recognized for excellence in the 2024 Air National Guard Medical Service Awards. The honors are presented annually by the National Guard Bureau in recognition of efforts that improve health care delivery and medical procedures, said Col. Patricia Adams, group commander. Lt. Col. Amy Riley, a nurse practitioner, was named Air National Guard Privileged Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year. Riley, who has more than 24 years of joint Army and Air military expertise, provided leadership to 11 Airmen while mentoring providers, nurses and medics in career and professional development. “Her clinical expertise, unwavering passion and dynamic leadership make her an exceptional provider and teammate,” Adams said. “She brings charisma, initiative and a breath of joint Army and Air experience to every mission.” Lt. Col. Thomas Hagan, chief nurse, received the Air National Guard Outstanding Excellence in Nursing Leadership Award. Hangen has held the title of chief nurse for eight years, providing unwavering leadership to nurses and medics, Adams said. He also oversees the wing’s immunization program, ensuring the deployability of 1,200 Airmen through the administration of more than 3,000 immunizations and lab procedures annually. “Hagan’s transformative leadership and strategic vision have cultivated a culture of excellence that will continue to elevate Kentucky’s medical capabilities across the enterprise for years to come,” Adams said. Chief Master Sgt. Marie Plaza, the group’s senior enlisted leader, was recognized with the Air National Guard Senior Non-commissioned Officer Leadership Award. Plaza’s efforts cultivated an environment for 37 Airmen to take pride in their programs, grown them for the future and secure engagement at every level of the organization, Adams said. “Chief Plaza truly exemplifies the spirit of these awards,” she said. “Her inclusive, adaptable and conscientious leadership has fostered a culture of collaboration, innovation and excellence. Tech. Sgt. Cristen E. Lane, an aerospace medicine technician, was named ANG Aerospace Medicine Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year. Lane managed more than 70 line-of-duty determination and retention waivers while liaising with commanders across the wing. She also led the medical lab, completing 400 blood draws and administering 375 immunizations to keep the wing’s medical readiness high. Adams praised Lane’s “dedication, strong work ethic and professionalism,” calling it “second to none.” “We could not be prouder of our Airmen,” Adams added. “Being selected for the awards is a well-deserved honor that reflects their unwavering commitment to both our Commonwealth and our country.”
