AF Surgeon General briefs AF Village residents Published May 31, 2008 By Sue Campbell 59th Medical Wing Public Affairs LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Lt. Gen. (Dr.) James Roudebush, Air Force Surgeon General, and 59th Medical Wing Commander Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Tom Travis recently spoke to residents of Air Force Villages I and II about the AF Medical Service and San Antonio medical Base Realignment and Closure initiatives. The briefings were conducted May 20 at the request of retired Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Paul Myers, former Air Force Surgeon General, former Wilford Hall Medical Center commander, and Air Force Village II resident. Air Force Villages I and II are residential communities in San Antonio, Texas, for retired and honorably separated officers, their spouses, widows, widowers and elderly dependents. Approximately 35 residents attended the Air Force Village I briefing and about 75 residents attended the Air Force Village II briefing. The San Antonio medical BRAC initiative involves the consolidation of Wilford Hall Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio into one medical region with two integrated campuses known as San Antonio Military Medical Center, or SAMMC. Brooke Army Medical Center will become the inpatient tertiary care center, providing all inpatient care, as well as all trauma and emergency medical care. The facility will be known as SAMMC-North. Wilford Hall Medical Center will be converted into a large ambulatory care center, SAMMC-South. "We were asked to provide a briefing to the Air Force Village residents on how the AF Medical Service is supporting the current war, and to update them on the changes associated with BRAC as we establish SAMMC. Both briefings were extremely well-received," said General Travis.
