The Mike O'Callaghan Federal Medical Center received a clinical investigational program designation October 2011 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

The mission statement for the U.S. Air Force Clinical Investigational Program is "to support Medical Center personnel in the implementation of approved clinical investigation and training projects. It aims to facilitate the research process and make it as easy as possible for the researcher to accomplish his or her objective," according to the David Grant U.S. Air Force Medical Center, 60th Medical Group clinical investigational facility.

Nellis' Medical Center is one of six Air Force facilities to receive this designation.

Similar to the overall mission statement of the U.S. Air Force CIP, the primary mission of the Nellis CIP is to support graduate medical education research. Lt. Col. (Dr.) Paul Crawford is the director of the Nellis CIP. He is currently working with a four-person support staff on 22 research studies with various foci ranging from diabetes to acupuncture.

"I would like to highlight the fact that even though the residency is barely three years old, I am incredibly proud that the Nellis CIP is already leading all Air Force Medical Service Family Medicine Residencies in scholarly publications and overall research output," said Col. John DeGoes, 99th Medical Group commander.
