Flu activity picks up nationwide

  • Published
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports most of the country is experiencing high levels of influenza-like-illness (ILI). Twenty-four states and New York City are now reporting high ILI activity.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It is transmitted primarily from person to person. However the virus can also be contracted by touching an object with flu viruses on it and then touching mouth or nose.

TO PROTECT YOUR HEALTH:

- Get Vaccinated. The first and most important step is to get a flu vaccination. The 2012-2013 vaccination is protective against the most common strain of influenza circulating. It's not too late. All MTF beneficiaries can report to the 23d MDG to receive the vaccine.

- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze; throw the tissue in the trash after use.

- Cough into sleeve instead of hands when tissue is not available.

- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. If warm water and soap are not available, alcohol based sanitizers are also effective.

- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because this is the way germs spread. Also try to avoid close contact with sick people.

If you experience any of the following symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches or fatigue (very tired), stay home and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
