Palyan 28th Bomb Wing Public Affairs ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- The Air Force offers a variety of training programs to help Airmen not only improve their health, but maintain a high level of expeditionary combat readiness. One of those programs is "Better Body, Better Life," a program designed to assist participants in achieving a variety of fitness and nutritional goals. The 28th Medical Group Health and Wellness Center Staff provided this engaging class for Airmen and their families Jan. 31. Abby Olson, 28th MDG HAWC dietician, said the five-week course that focuses on a different topic each week, ranging from better nutrition with portion control, to making better choices when dining out. "I teach the diet and nutrition portion of the class," said Olson. "I do my best to teach people how to balance the calories they consume with calories they burn throughout the day. I also give them a broader understanding of the different food groups, and how they should integrate fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy products into their diet." Master Sgt. Keith Varnado, 28th Munitions Squadron munitions systems flight chief, began attending the course Jan. 17. He said changing his routine was the most difficult part of the program, adding that although he's had to adapt a great deal, he enjoys the benefits that come with a healthy diet. "I recently underwent surgery on my back because of an injury," Varnado explained. "After gaining a little weight, I decided it was a good time to figure out what I could do to shed some pounds without sacrificing my quality of life." Olson added the program is open to anyone on base who is interested in improving their health. She said the HAWC staff focuses on making it a comfortable environment for attendees to relax and absorb information. "It's very important to offer classes that educate our Airmen," Olson said. "They are the future of the U.S. Air Force. They can carry the healthy behaviors they learn in this class with them throughout their careers."
