Local group raises more than $22K for wounded warriors Published Feb. 13, 2013 By Nathan Simmons 59th Medical Wing Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas -- A local nonprofit group recently donated $22,272.68 to the 59th Medical Wing - all of which will directly benefit its patients and their families. Wilford Hall Auxiliary, a group of spouses of active-duty and retired medical personnel, presented a check to 59th MDW Commander Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Byron C. Hepburn on Feb. 5. "It's terrific to have such an active and supportive group of people looking out for the interests of our wounded warriors and our Medical Wing families," Hepburn said. The funding will cover transportation expenses of recovering patients and their families in situations when funding isn't available. "This gift is intended to enable ill and injured patients to be together with loved ones who can provide invaluable support during their time of treatment and rehabilitation," said Laura Wang, WHA president. "Members of WHA feel that having a support person with you during your time of need is the quickest road to recovery. We are very happy to play a small part in helping our wounded warriors." The group auctioned off more than 100 items at its first Diamonds and Denim Charity Auction, held in March 2012 - WHA event that raised $40,000. What wasn't donated to the 59th MDW will be used to fund various events that support the military and their families throughout the year, including providing meals for Fisher House families, memory boxes for families who have lost an infant, and pre-deployment picnics. The next Diamonds and Denim Charity Auction is March 2, 6 p.m., at the Fort Sam Houston Golf Club. Military identification is not required, and tickets are available for $25 at www.wilfordhallauxiliary.com. The WHA is dedicated to supporting members of the San Antonio Military Health System and their families by organizing service projects, donations and social events.
