Col. (Dr.) Melissa M. Runge is the Command Surgeon, United States Space Command, Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado. She advises the CDRUSSPACECOM and the command’s senior staff on all Joint Health Service in support of policy, plans and engagements in order to deter aggression and develop combat ready forces prepared to fight for and preserve United States and allied space superiority. In addition, she develops and implements medical plans, programs and policies in support of global Human Space Flight Support operations.
Previously, Col. Runge served as the Deputy Group Commander and Health Care Operations Squadron Commander at the 42d Medical Group, 42d Air Base Wing, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. She led three flights with eight specialties to support the medical needs of 39,000 beneficiaries. In addition, she led COVID-19 pandemic operations, partnering with federal and civilian agencies to establish local processes for testing and vaccine distribution across the 42d Air Base Wing, Air University and 44 mission partners.
Col. Runge received her commission through the Air Force Reserve Officer’s Training Corps at the Pennsylvania State University. She is a Flight Surgeon, board-certified in Family Medicine and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians with current clinical practice at the 21st Medical Group on Peterson SFB.
