816th Medical Group (816 MDG)

"Emblem- The 816th Medical Group (816 MDG) was constituted on Dec 23, 1958. It was activated on March 1, 1959 at Altus Air Force Base, Okla., and assigned to the 11th Bombardment (later 11th Strategic Aerospace) Wing. During the unit’s operation, Altus was assigned to Strategic Air Command (SAC) and hosted 12 Atlas missile silos with a launch facility that was manned around the clock. The 816 MDG remained at Altus during the 1966 loss of the Atlas and B-52 mission and remained until well into the start of the new communications and airlift missions. The unit was discontinued when the base transitioned to Military Airlift Command (MAC) and it was inactivated on Jul 2, 1968. Although not in existence for long, the 816 MDG had one of the most distinctive emblems ever designed for the Air Force Medical Service."
