The mission of Altus Air Force Base is “Forging Combat Mobility Forces…Deploying Airman Warriors”.

The 97th Medical Group supports the 97th Air Mobility Wing and 58 tenant units with the global reach mission by providing healthcare to enable training and deploying the Air Force’s C-17, KC-135, and KC-46 Pegasus aircrews and their families. The 97th MDG is staffed with 175 healthcare professionals, providing health services for more than 6,000 beneficiaries, 600 flight status patients, and 2,000 students. The 97th MDG is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Care and the American Dental Association.

The 97th Medical Support Squadron consists of six flights providing personnel and administration services including, Resource Management, TRICARE Operations and Patient Administration, Medical Readiness, Information Management, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Diagnostic Imaging, Logistics and Facility Management.

The 97th Medical Operations Squadron provides comprehensive primary care and space-available subspecialty care to TRICARE-enrolled patients at the medical group. The squadron is comprised of seven flights: Primary Care, Mental Health, Aerospace and Operational Medicine, Aerospace and Operational Physiology, Public Health, Bioenvironmental and Dental. Available services include: allergy, immunization, family advocacy, mental health, substance abuse counseling, family medicine, pediatrics, optometry, and dental services for active duty military members.

Families of active duty military are highly encouraged to enroll into TRICARE Prime and the TRICARE Dental Program to obtain their health care needs at the clinic and dental care from civilian dentists. All appointments for TRICARE Standard and TRICARE for Life patients will be based on Space Availability. We highly recommend patients who are not TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Plus familiarize themselves with their medical care benefits.

#TuesdayTrivia Summer cookouts are a great way for Airmen to spend time with family and friends. But did you know leaving food out at improper temperatures for too long can put them in the “danger zone”? Take a guess at the “danger zone” temperature range when bacteria in food can multiply rapidly, and lead to foodborne illness.

When an 11-month-old patient visited the 72nd MDG for allergy testing, Mr. Raymond “Mike” Showalter asked the primary care doctor to get the patient’s 1-year-old blood work done in the same visit, saving the baby from additional blood drawings and the family from a second visit. When the patient’s H&H (hemoglobin and hematocrit) blood level came back critically low, the patient was sent to a children’s hospital for emergency care. Mr. Showalter’s time-saving recommendation was a critical decision that saved the child’s life. For his actions, Mr. Showalter is this week’s #TrustedCare hero!

#AFMSHistory: Two French aviation cadets (left and right) with a Dutch cadet display the 20,000th pint of blood collected at Lackland AFB Blood Donor Center. The men were part of more than 100 European and American aviation cadets from a pre-flight training group who volunteered to give blood for the Armed Forces campaign. Today we still partner with the French Armed Forces and celebrate #BastilleDay, their national holiday. #TBT Medical technicians at the Air Force’s Aero-Medical Laboratory developed “Horace” the Head to improve human performance. Horace, could survive in up to 70,000 feet in a pressure chamber, and helped researchers determine quality standards for aircrew’s headgear. He was also used to test oxygen masks in extreme cold or heat to avoid harming anyone.
