The U.S. Air Force Surgeon General visited here Jan. 11 and 12, to speak with, and learn from 92nd Medical Group leadership and Airmen.

Lt. Gen. Mark Ediger, U.S. Air Force Surgeon General, and Chief Master Sgt. George Cum, Medical Enlisted Force and Enlisted Corps chief, learned about the implications of the Department of Defense’s new Electronic Health Record, the Military Health System GENESIS.

“It’s a big change for the medics here. They’re the first medical treatment facility in all of the DoD to implement this program,” Ediger said. “That’s asking a lot of the team here, but they took it on with a lot of enthusiasm and they’ve worked very hard and it’s complicated their work day. But, by doing what they’re doing, and doing it well, they’re capturing lessons that are enabling adjustments that will help us deploy this throughout the DoD in the coming years.”

This system combines health records from base primary care providers, pharmacy, laboratory, immunization and dental clinics all on one network. It will also enable the base to share information with civilian and Veterans Affairs providers.

“The men and women at the 92nd Medical Group are innovators. They were given a product to implement; they’re figuring out ways to make it better, they’re reporting it back to lead agents and they’re really writing history when it comes to the EHR,” Cum said. “They’re doing all of this while continuing to accomplish their mission. It’s a daunting task, but they are doing an awesome job at it.”

The caliber of Airmen coming into the Air Force Medical Service now are ten times smarter and savvier when we first came in 28 years ago, Cum said. It’s just amazing. They’re making history every day, from the new Airman in the pharmacy all the way up to the 92nd MDG commander.

“We’re really impressed with the way the team here has stepped up. By being on the leading edge of this they’re breaking new ground and helping the entire Military Health System,” Ediger said. “In today’s Air Force the mission asks a lot from its Airmen. As medics, we serve Airmen to ensure they’re fit and healthy, so they can meet all the demands of a growing and expanding mission, and as medics we all feel honored to do that.”
